FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

PRE SIGN UP QUESTIONS

DO I NEED TO PAY NOW?

Places for NCS are limited, and allocated on a first come, first served basis. To be assured of a spot, you would need to pay the contribution fee. This is a maximum contribution of £50, and could be £10 if you have any benefits coming into the home. This covers cost of equipment, activities, accommodation, food and drink.

IS THERE ANY FINANCIAL SUPPORT AVAILABLE?

The standard price for taking part in NCS is a one off contribution fee of £50. This entitles you to your travel, accommodation and food throughout the programme. If you require any financial support, we do have discounts available; however, we would need to run through an eligibility criteria to determine this.

MY SON/DAUGHTER HAS A DISABILITY. CAN THEY STILL ATTEND?

NCS is committed to being open to all. We will look to accommodate young people with disabilities wherever possible, and all NCS providers are trained to a high standard to be able to assess individual needs and help everyone enjoy the NCS experience.

HAVE DBS CHECKS BEEN CARRIED OUT ON ALL SUPERVISORS ATTENDING THE PROGRAMME?

All NCS staff and volunteers on programme are subject to enhanced DBS checks.

WILL THERE BE PROPER SUPERVISION AND SECURITY?

As a government-backed programme, safety and security are paramount to NCS. All staff and volunteers are subject to enhanced CRB checks, including here at the Contact Centre, and all venues are rigorously audited to ensure the highest standards of safety.

WILL WE BE GIVEN EXACT DATES AND LOCATIONS? Once you have confirmed your place, dates and locations will be confirmed by your local NCS team at the next stage of the sign-up process.

CAN A YOUNG PERSON APPLY IF THEY HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD?

We urge them to apply as there is a strong chance that their criminal history will not stand in their way of taking part in NCS.

Their parent or guardian should give as much detail as possible when completing their application (telephone or written).

A member of our local provider team will contact their parent / guardian or supervising officer if they need any further information.

Such cases are determined on an individual basis, and acceptance is offered at our local providers discretion

DO I NEED TO BUY ANY EXTRA EQUIPMENT? No, all equipment will be provided by your local group and the outdoor activity centre for your outdoor residential. However you will need clothes that you won’t mind getting dirty! Old jogger bottoms, old trainers and things like that.

WILL MY SON/DAUGHTER NEED TO BRING ANY EXTRA MONEY? Young people do not have to bring any money as food is provided for the part(s) of the programme where they are staying away from home. The accommodation, activities and equipment for NCS activities are all included too. However, young people may want to bring a small amount of pocket money with them as there may be opportunities to buy sweets, souvenirs and so on – we suggest a maximum of £10 to cover this.

CAN MY SON/DAUGHTER TAKE THEIR MOBILE PHONE? Yes, and your son/daughter will be able to use their mobile phone when activities are not taking place. However, mobile phone usage during activity time is not allowed. Please note that the quality and availability of mobile phone signal will vary, especially during the first residential phase. With regards to insurance for personal belongings, you would need to speak to the NCS team in your area.
