NCS North East Regional Ambassador School

At the NCS North East Star School Awards 2017, we crowned a school that had gone above and beyond in ensuring NCS is embedded in their ethos as our Regional Ambassador School. Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy implemented a plan in coordination with the NCS North East recruitment team that worked to maximise the benefits of the programme for their students.

Alex Rayner, Assistant Principal of Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy, said:

“Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy prides itself on supporting every student to flourish and succeed in life after Lord Lawson. National Citizen Service (NCS) enriches our curriculum, contributes to Ofsted judgements, and enhances the careers education available to our students. This is why we believe every student should have the chance to take part in the scheme and benefit from all of the advantages it provides.

The skills, aptitudes and experiences that young people gain through NCS help them in their studies, and set them up to successfully take their next steps into further studies, employment or training. It is recognised by UCAS and the social action element enhances work experience so CV’s/applications really stand out and equip students with skills which are valuable in their life after Lord Lawson. The students develop confidence, as well as leadership, teamwork and communication skills. We see first-hand that our students finish NCS more confident than before, feeling they have gained useful skills for the future and they are more positive toward people from different backgrounds.

We want to maximise the benefits of the programme, so it works hard for our academy and our students. We encourage all young people to take part. Working with Chris, our NCS recruitment coordinator, we make sure they and their parents/guardians hear about this incredible opportunity. As well as holding NCS assemblies, we are pleased to have the team at our parents evenings, and to spread the word via letters home, social media, SMS texts and more. We are thrilled to have had this proactive engagement recognised nationally, by winning NCS Regional Ambassador School Status for the North East. The academy looks forward to building upon the relationship we have fostered with NCS over the forthcoming months and years to enable even more young people to achieve their potential.”
